Sermon on the Mount
 The
Sermon on the Mount is a collection of sayings and teachings of Jesus.
Jesus of Nazareth gave this sermon on a mountainside near Capernaum to his
disciples and a large crowd.Jesus proclaimed his attitude towards the law: position, authority, and money are not important in his kingdom -- what matters is faithful obedience from the heart. Jesus told his disciples not to expect fame and fortune, but hunger, mourning, and persecution. Also that they would be rewarded -- but perhaps not in this life This sermon also contains the Lord's Prayer and a version of the Golden Rule. |
The Beatitudes are a set of teachings by Jesus in Matthew and Luke. The term Beatitude comes from the Latin adjective beatus which means happy, fortunate, or blissful. The teachings are expressed as eight blessings in the Sermon on the Mount. Each Beatitude consists of two phrases: the condition and the result. The Beatitudes present a new set of Christian ideals that focus on love and humility; they echo the highest ideals of the teachings of Jesus on mercy, spirituality and compassion.
THE BEATITUDES
Blessed are the poor in spirit
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
for they will be comforted.
for they will inherit the earth.
for they will be filled
for they will be shown mercy.
for they will see God.
for they will be called sons of God.

THE BEATITUDES - (Sermon on the Mount)
Jesus said that God's way of living usually contradicts the world's.
If you want to live for God you must be ready to say an do what seems strange to the world. You must be willing to give when others take, to love when others hate, to help when others abuse.
By giving up your own rights in order to serve others, you will one day receive everything God has in store for you.
The Beatitudes are a code of ethics for the disciples and a standard of conduct for all believers. They must be taken as a while to describe what we should be like as Christ's followers.
Each Beatitude tells how to be blessed. "Blessed" means more than happiness. It implies the fortunate or enviable state of those who are in God's kingdom. They don't promise pleasure or earthly prosperity. "Blessed" means the experience of hope and joy, independent of outward circumstances. To find hope and joy, the deepest form of happiness, follow Jesus no matter what the cost.
"Jesus said we should check our motives in three areas: 1. Generosity,
2. Prayer and 3. Fasting. These acts should not be self-centered, but
God-centered done not to make us look good but to make God look
good. The reward God promises is not material. With your next good
deed, ask 'Would I still do this if no one would ever know it?'

"When Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge crowds, he climbed a hillside. Those who were apprenticed to him, the committed, climbed with him. Arriving at a quiet place, he sat down and taught his climbing companions. This is what he said: "You're blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and h is rule." "You're blessed when you feel you've lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you."
