Underwood Public School - Album #1.
The
first Underwood School, in 1903-04, was located at Ladds Hall, an
upstairs room over McGray's Hardware Store and where Dr.
Anderson's office later was located.
Miss Myrtle Ladd taught twenty or more children.

Myrtle Ladd (1903-04, 1926-27)
The second term of School in Underwood (1904-05) was held at the Methodist church. Mrs. Wells was hired to teach twenty pupils.

In the fall of 1904, the people of Underwood voted to build a $5,000.00 school house which was ready for the school year of 1905-06 and located where the St. John's Lutheran Church first stood. Frank C. Malloy taught the twenty-five pupils in the grammar room upstairs, while Mrs. Wells, with her twenty primary pupils were downstairs.

In 1907 a
country school was moved into town and placed on a corner of the
school lot. A new addition was built on the east side and was
ready for the school year of 1908-09. The school now had a total
of six rooms, a library and two play rooms.
On April 28, 1925 a fire destroyed this school, and the 1925-26 school year was held in the city hall, the Methodist Church and Methodist parsonage, while a new school was built, where it is still located in the northwest part of town.

The 1926-27 school year was held in the new Underwood School which remained the same as this photo until a new addition was added in 1953.
On November 30,
1954, a new addition was dedicated which included five new
classrooms, a home economics suite of four units, dining room
with tables, kitchen with modern equipment, an auditorium
gymnasium seating 1100 people, and a physical education facility.
This facility is now known as the Vonderheide Auditorium in honor
of one of the Underwood "Comets" greatest fans: Syl
Vonderheide.

"How many hours have many of us spent in classrooms similar to this one?" Remember the desks, the blackboard (aren't they green now?), the American Flag, the ceiling lights, probably some ink wells too.
